"Planning Plus Practice = Resilience"

Training Opportunities

Picture
Planning plus practice equals resilience. What better way to get prepared than to volunteer with community organizations that provide practice and training opportunities in emergency preparedness. You'll get to know people, have fun, and get prepared all at the same time. In addition, you'll have the opportunity to give back to your community by being informed and ready to serve when it counts the most--during an emergency. Keep reading for more information about a variety of great organizations that you can join.

Neighbors Ready! Volunteer Opportunities

We invite you to volunteer with Neighbors Ready! We are a grassroots group of volunteers who help neighbors by offering educational events, information, and a variety of opportunities to learn about easy ways you can prepare for emergencies and disasters. Your participation will make a difference in your life, as well as the lives of many others--your family, your neighbors, and your community. By participating, you are creating more caring, connected, and resilient neighborhoods. You'll make new friends, learn a lot, and have fun doing it.  Join our friendly group of neighbors and get more connected.  Check out our Volunteer page for more information.

Community Emergency Response Teams

CERT (Community Emergency Response Team) is a FEMA-sponsored program that educates and trains volunteers in disaster preparedness. This program, established in all 50 states, offers a consistent platform to create teams that professional responders can rely on during disaster situations. CERT's free training includes coursework on disaster preparedness, disaster medical operations, light search and rescue, and more. If you live inside the Beaverton school district, you can sign up for Beaverton CERT's training program. If you live outside the Beaverton Oregon area, find your local CERT team on the FEMA website.

Amateur Radio Organizations

If you live in the Beaverton area, once you have your license, you can join the Beaverton Emergency Radio Team (BERT) to support your local community.
In times of crisis and natural disasters, amateur radio is often used as a means of emergency communication when landline telephones, cell phones and other conventional means of communications fail. These organizations can help you learn more about operating amateur (Ham) radios, get your license, and volunteer:
  • ARRL, the National Association for Amateur Radio, offers classes for becoming a licensed Ham Radio operator and much more.
  • Amateur Radio Emergency Service (ARES) gives  people with an amateur radio license an opportunity to provide public service communications support--and get lots of on-the-air practice.
