Do you want to make a difference to your family, friends, and community? Consider becoming a Community Host for the Be 2-Weeks Ready program. This program was developed by Oregon Emergency Management (OEM) to help families, neighborhoods and communities strive to be self-sufficient for two weeks in the event of a disaster. As a Community Host, you play an important role in building your community’s resiliency by:
  • Educating members of your community on the eight units of preparedness
  • Facilitating conversations regarding levels of preparedness
  • Helping to build community resiliency and confidence to survive any disaster
This page provides tools, tips, and materials to help Community Hosts better understand the program and to make it work in your community. It includes these sections:
  • Community preparedness benefits
  • How to get started
  • What do Community Hosts do?
  • Principles of adult learning
  • Presentation skills and tips
  • Unit presentations and handouts
  • Community Host Guide
  • Tools for Program Coordinators

Community preparedness benefits

The Be 2 Weeks Ready program is designed to help you prepare your community for emergencies. While people can learn and get prepared on their own, there are many benefits to learning about preparedness within your social circles. For example, you can learn about different skills and resources that other people have, as well as who may need assistance during a disaster and who might be able assist.
When we say "community," we mean any group of people who spend time together, such as groups that share common interests, live in the same area, have similar jobs or work together. A community group could include employees in a work environment, students and their family members, faith-based groups, neighborhood associations, or a local 4-H club. The intent is to share this program with groups already established in communities that can work together to create a culture of preparedness.
Communities are important because they can provide collective strength during tough times. When people in the same area come together to prepare, they can pool resources, share knowledge and offer support. This makes everyone better equipped to handle the challenges that come with prolonged emergencies.

Be prepared! We'll show you how. Click the image to contact Neighbors Ready!
You can participate in the Be 2 Weeks Ready program by downloading the toolkit in your preferred language to learn at  your own pace, OR you can participate as a community. Community groups participating in this program are facilitated by volunteer Community Hosts--members of the community who are trained and mentored by a Program Coordinator for Be 2 Weeks Ready. In Oregon, everyone within a community participating in the program receives a printed copy of the Tool Kit.
Neighbors Ready! is a program coordinator for communities located in the Beaverton School District area. If you'd like to organize your community or group and live or work in the Beaverton School district boundaries, you can contact Neighbors Ready! We have a team of trained volunteer Program Coordinators who can help train you to become a Community Host. We can get you started by helping you with materials, advice and training in the Be 2 Weeks Ready program. We'll also help facilitate your first meeting, if you'd like.
If you live in Oregon outside the Beaverton School District area, and you want to find a Program Coordinator to help you organize your community or neighborhood,  contact Oregon Emergency Management at:
[email protected]

What do community hosts do?

A Community Host is the link between the Program Coordinator and community members receiving the Be 2 Weeks Ready program. Community hosts do the following:
  • Work with the Program Coordinator to learn about Be 2 Weeks Ready Tool Kit, report attendance, and request Tool Kits (booklets) for your community meetings.
  • Facilitate discussions and activities. You can do this as a sole community host, with a partner co-host, or enlist the help of other community members with a team approach. For example, you can ask community members who might have expertise or a special interest in a topic to lead one or more of the Tool Kit units. Many hands make light work.
  • Learn by doing and teaching. You don't need to be an expert to facilitate this program. The materials and activities in the Tool Kit and on this website provide you with all the background you and your community needs to work through each unit. Your Program Coordinator can help when you have questions. Learn by doing, while you build resiliency at home and within your community.
  • Schedule community meetings. This program is designed to be delivered at whatever pace fits the community’s needs. You could meet weekly or monthly, covering one or more units per meeting. The units can be delivered in an hour or could take longer depending on the group’s participation and interest. You can cover all of the topics in the Tool Kit, or select one or two depending on the interest and needs of the group.
  • Get creative and have fun! You know your community the best. Ask questions to gauge their interests and the ways they learn best. For example, make Unit 3, Food Plan, a potluck where people bring their favorite shelf-stable food.

Principles of adult learning

Understanding some key principles of adult learning can help as you facilitate your community group. Keep these principles in mind:
  • Relevance & Goal-Oriented: Learning must be practical, applicable, and solve real-world problems or meet immediate needs.
  • Experience-Based: They use past knowledge as a foundation, linking new info to existing understanding. Consider asking others to share their experiences or tell stories to help with learning.
  • Self-Direction: Adults prefer control, autonomy, and setting their own learning goals.
  • Problem-Centered: Adults are motivated to learn when they can solve a problem or achieve a specific outcome.
  • Intrinsic Motivation: While external factors matter, internal drivers (confidence, self-esteem) are powerful motivation for achieving the goals.

Presentation skills and tips

You don't need to be a professional trainer to be a Community Host. At a recent event, Gloria Lee, a Neighbors Ready! Program Manager, provided a half-hour of instruction on presentation skills to train community hosts on the basics. The audience caught on fast, and during an exercise, they demonstrated their skills with creativity and confidence. Check out her slide deck, "Presentation Skills for Hosts" here.

Unit presentations and handouts

To help Community Hosts get started, Neighbors Ready! has created a set of presentations that complement the Be 2 Weeks Ready Toolkit developed by Oregon Emergency Management (OEM). We’ve incorporated slides provided by OEM into our own slide decks, and have incorporated additional handouts developed by Neighbors Ready! that we use in our presentations. These additional tools can enhance learning and support progress toward the goal of helping each participant and community get prepared.
We welcome Community Hosts who have been trained by Neighbors Ready! or OEM to use these slides to provide FREE, non-profit education to the public—supporting our mission and the  goals of the “Be 2 Weeks Ready” program. You can download the slide decks below as PDFs with speaker notes included. If you would like to get a copy of any or all of the slide decks in PowerPoint format to use with your community, contact us with your request.
