One of our Neighbors Ready! board members, Cate Arnold, says that the task of getting prepared is like eating an elephant. How do you do it? Take one bite at a time. Getting supplies organized into kits can feel overwhelming, but by breaking the task down into kits, starting with smaller kits first, you'll find that the process becomes much more manageable. We talk about how to do this and provide checklists on our Go Bags & Emergency Supplies webpage.

You probably have most of the supplies around your house already. We recommend that you assemble your kits and go bags that are customized to your unique needs. When you come up short, you may need to buy a few supplies. While Neighbors Ready! doesn't make specific recommendations for products. However, you may find some parts of this article helpful: "The Best Emergency Preparedness Supplies," by Ellen Airhart published in the New York Times, Wirecutter, July 30, 2025.
