Be 2 Weeks Ready

Be 2-Weeks Ready is a program developed by Oregon Emergency Management (OEM) to help families, neighborhoods and communities strive to be self-sufficient for two weeks in the event of a disaster. Recently, we've experienced more frequent emergencies and disasters, including floods, drought, wildfires, ice storms, excessive heat and a pandemic. Being prepared can make a big difference in your survival and could save your life. That's why individuals, families and communities should take steps to "Be 2 Weeks Ready."   For their latest materials, check out the Be 2-Weeks Ready! publications page. For creative ideas to engage your neighbors, download the Be 2 Weeks Ready Toolkit.

What is Be 2 Weeks Ready?

Being 2 Weeks Ready means having an emergency plan and enough supplies for you and everyone in your household to survive for at least two weeks following a disaster. When you’re 2 Weeks Ready, you’re prepared for any type of emergency – a power outage, a wildfire evacuation, or a large earthquake and tsunami. Getting prepared for 2 weeks may sound overwhelming, but you're probably more prepared than you think! The Be 2 Weeks Ready program is designed to help you start from where you're at and build your self-reliance and community preparedness step-by-step.

The toolkit is available in multiple languages, including English, Spanish, Vietnamese, Chinese and Russian. Check out OEM's Be 2 Weeks Ready webpage for downloads.

The Be 2 Weeks Ready program is available through a comprehensive toolkit provided by Oregon Emergency Management (OEM). The tool kit contains eight units that provide essential information and practical steps to ensure you are prepared for emergencies. The tool kit also includes 30 engaging activities designed to enhance your readiness and understanding. Activities can be performed alone, or with a group lead by a local program coordinator. The 8 units include:
  1. Preparing to Prepare
  2. Your Emergency Plan
  3. Food Plan
  4. Water Plan
  5. Waste and Hygiene Plan
  6. Shelter Plan
  7. First-Aid Plan
  8. Emergency Management
Do one unit at a time, at your own pace. By the end of the program, you’ll be confident and prepared when the next disaster strikes.

How do I get started?

You can participate in the Be 2 Weeks Ready program:
  • Individually: Download the toolkit in your preferred language and learn at your own pace.
  • As a community: You can participate as a community, any group of people who spend time together. Examples include: coworkers, parents of students at a school, neighborhood associations, 4-H club, members of a congregation, recreational teams, students in a college dorm, and so on.
Community groups participating in this program are facilitated by Community Hosts. And in Oregon, everyone within the community receives a printed copy of the toolkit.

Why prepare a community?

Getting prepared is more effective — and more fun! — when you share the responsibility with your friends, family, neighbors, or community group. While some people think they are better off going it alone, the truth is that you'll have a better chance of survival if you do some planning and get to know your neighbors or members of your community BEFORE a disaster strikes. That's what neighborhood readiness is all about. Sharing skills and making an agreement to check up on each other in the event of a disaster.
In a disaster, your neighbors become your first responders. When a disaster or an emergency occurs, our emergency response agencies like police, fire, and FEMA will be initially overwhelmed. What that means is that you and your neighbors will be on your own!  Your survival will depending on your own skills and resources, and those of your neighbors. If your injured or hurt during or after a disaster, your neighbors may save your life or the lives of your family members. Preparing with your neighbors and community gives you strength in numbers.
